Friday Forum: Thanksgiving (Part II)

Thanksgiving seems to get crowded out.
It is sandwiched between the growing event on Oct. 31
and the big holiday on Dec. 25.
It is crowded out by shopping,
by football,
by FOOD!

We once attended a church that had a service on Thanksgiving Day.
It was hard to plan the cooking around a morning service,
but ... I loved the service and the focus for the day.

Do you do something special to keep the "thanks" in Thanksgiving?

  1. My grandparents' church in the Cleveland, OH area would always have a morning service on Thanksgiving Day. It was always packed. The music was wonderful. A simple message was given, focusing on gratitude to the LORD. A perfect way to begin the day. Some of my best memories as a child. How things have changed!

    1. Sounds like a winner - wish more churches did this.

  2. I like the Aunt Dawn's idea that shows the church taking the lead. Perhaps our ideas are not "special" but they help us.
    1. Prepare: Being thankful on one day, for us requires keeping thanks year round. Dad suggested a "praise" journal for those who are focused upon self. Karen started a thankful poster last week that is added to throughout the week.
    2. Simplify: Freeing our mind from the urgent schedule we have created to give thanks instead of grumbling about the unimportant that is not getting done as quickly or as well as I would have wanted.
    3. Serve: Our family is always more thankful, when we serve someone else.

    1. 1. I too have tried to practice thankfulness all year. 2. Simplifying on Thanksgiving is a great idea - hubby helps me with this ... so that we can actually enjoy the day rather than "living" in the kitchen. 3. It is easier to be thankful when you see how much you have compared to many.
